Wellington rainwear label Okewa recently released their latest collection Silk and Soul. Like Okewa’s core collection, Silk and Soul stretches from everyday, versatile pieces to sophisticated trench coats and overcoats, making it both function-friendly and outing ready. With the unpredictable Wellington weather especially in mind, Okewa’s raincoats are a transeasonal staple, making them perfect for those many unexpected summer rainy days.
The New Zealand made raincoats are all meticulously cut from two-layer Japanese fabrics and completely seam sealed. Again, Okewa has negated the cringey need to step into another tramping shop, extending their offerings of fully waterproof outerwear that we actually want to wear.
Silk and Soul was inspired by singer Nina Simone’s bold and chaotic life. According to designer, Nevada, the collection juxtaposes two elements: fluidity and structure, a reflection of the division between Nina’s ardent seeming life with the reality of desolation she often grappled with.
“The collection revolves around a moody colour palette of Militant Olive and a Darkened-Navy Herringbone and considers the power, grace and strength of this woman who found herself “in-between the black and white keys on the piano”. We hope the coats reflect her grace and elegance but also something of her dark inner thoughts and emotions”.
