We chat to stylist Trudi Bennett of Wardrobe Flair…

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background in Personal Styling?

I recently moved to Auckland with my husband and 2 children, Alex 11 & Alana 9. I began my Personal Styling business, Wardrobe Flair, in Wellington over 9 years ago. It started purely with one-on-one styling for men and women but has since grown to include corporate clients; including Westfield, who we are personal stylists and shoppers for; seminar, conference and fundraising presentations; some radio and TV work; fashion blogging for online mags and malls plus consultancy work with fashion designers on their collections. I love people, variety and clothing, so this job suits me to a T!

What inspires you?

People who book sessions with us inspire me. Firstly because it can seem a scary concept for some people and secondly I admire them for deciding to do something about an area of their life they feel they have lost direction or need a confidence boost in. This can be anything from clearing out the wardrobe, getting their colours done, knowing what styles suit their shape or learning how to shop efficiently. In this job we often get tears (happy and sad) huge smiles when a changing room door is opened, lots of hugs and heart-warming emails of thanks. It’s a hugely rewarding job.

Who uses Personal Stylists?

People who realise that when you invest some money in learning how to buy and wear clothing that suits you, you end up saving money. You end up enjoying what you have and feeling confident you are doing the best you can with what you have. I’ve seen ages 2-78, Sizes 4-36, mums to musicians, priests (yes it’s true quite a few!) to professionals. A call is often triggered by a life event, or reasons like weight loss and gains, bodies changing after babies, a step up the corporate ladder, returning to the workforce or a significant birthday.

What do you do when you are not styling people or presenting?

I adore Op-Shopping and no, I never get tired of shopping! A lot of my clients hate shopping so they struggle to believe this can be true. I love walking, mountain biking and hope to do some kayaking here in Auckland. I’m a passionate rugby supporter (Hurricanes all the way) and I adore cooking. I am happiest surrounded by friends and family over a meal I’ve cooked with a big glass of red wine in hand.

What are your plans in the near future with Wardrobe Flair?

My colleague Sarah is now running Wellington Wardrobe Flair whilst I launch the Auckland branch. I’m excited about meeting new and interesting people and showing Auckland my particular brand of personal styling, which is a mix of down to earth, practical, and logical advice delivered in a relaxed, enjoyable way.
