You’ve packed your tickets (don’t laugh – many leave them at home!), your hat, flat shoes, phone, and sunscreen. What to wear? Here’s our tips for Big Day Out 2014. I would dress for a music festival like Ingrid Starnes, pictured left. The stylish NZ designer and mother wears a pretty silk printed summer dress of her own label with sleeves for the sun and a cool wide brimmed hat and sunglasses. Perfect.
First up – be sunsmart. A whole day in scorching sun will seriously affect your enjoyment – not to mention harm your skin – so take suncreen, a hat, and some clothes to layer.
A hat is now a cool accessory as well as a practical piece of garb so go for a boho wide floppy style, or a rock chic cap, or a five panel streetsyle cap such as at I Love Ugly. I think many of the men’s hats look amazing on women so think broadly and shop around. Below: Cotton Festival Hat in black $24.99 from Glassons.
Speaking of layering up, it’s worth remembering when you’re getting dressed in the heat of the day that it does get cold at night, and they have a coat check on site. I would wear a loose pretty kimono – such as this Polly Oriental Lace Kimono I got at Boohoo.com and is now halfprice in their January sale for $30.
Sunscreen is not an option it is a necessity. I’ve been using these ones below this summer. For a festival scenario the Neutrogena spray on would be perfect for ‘getting to all your bits’ and for your face, an organic one is your best bet. Sunglasses – I adore designer sunnies but if you don’t want to risk them falling off and getting trampled/scratched/stolen at a music festival, get some at Kmart, or I adore Le Specs which are sold at Farmers and various stockists nationwide.
Flat shoes – the biggest choice would have to be at Number One Shoes and they’re on sale at the moment. They are going to get muddy and stood upon, so don’t be too precious about your designer trainers at a music fest. Remember, even Kate Moss wears wellies to them. A pretty sun dress, or edgier shorts and a cute top or rock n rool tee are popular music festival go-to outfits. Here are some I shot last year, on Thread. See the entire fashion festival 2013 post here.
