We talked to d&m salon co-owner Michael Sisaengrath about the exciting announcement that the 3-year-old Ponsonby salon is the only NZ finalist in the Australasian Schwarzkopf salon team of the year award, and 1 of only 4 competing for the coveted prize…

It’s the first time the previous national competition is combining New Zealand with Australian salons.Six photographs were submitted, shot by Craig Owen, and styled by Barry Betham with makeup by Amy Fiebig. Hair was styled by Danny Pato and Michael Sisaengrath with colour by Shannon Lee-Johnson.

"I am so excited! I got the call from Danny (co-owner of d&m) at 1am when it was announced in Australia on Tuesday night. I can’t wait til the Gala Awards night in Australia in June."

How did it all happen?

"We were chosen to apply; application is by invitation only. Not sure which other NZ salons were invited! Half of it was photographic work and half was a written report of our team values and practices and so on. We had to submit two referrals from well-known clients, and (WORLD designer) Denise Estrange-Corbet and (fashion journalist) Katie Newton were our referees."

Why do you think d&m did so well?

"Franchise salons have to follow a system. We’re a stand-alone salon so we encourage our stylists to allow their creativity without rules and restrictions" said Michael. "Salons get moulded then lose control of quality of your work."

"There’s no self-expression" agreed Shannon-Lee Johnson.

What’s the outcome of this nomination for d&m?

"Being recognised for how creative the team are, and that working as a team we can create great things" said Michael.

d&m hair design won Salon Team of the Year at the 2008/2009 Schwarzkopf Professional NZ Hairdressing Awards, which has been replaced by the new combined Australian awards starting this year. As well as salon team, they took out awards for Hairdresser of the Year, Northern Hairdresser of the Year, Best Photographer, and Best Makeup.

"People are watching us, after out last win. Clients have been coming in this week, seeing the flowers on the counter and when they hear about the award nomination they say, ‘I’m in the right place’ cos we are salon of the year finalists."
