I thought duck down, dandelions, kittens and baby bottoms were soft – but that was until I got my mittens on this merino wool wrap from South Island company, Jane Henry Merino.

The Christchurch company produces ultrafine, New Zealand-made merino shawls for baby and scarves and garments for women, all without dyes, and completely traceable.

I especially like the fact that the naturally coloured merino is without chemical finishes, bleaches, softeners or dyes. That’s good for the planet, and good for baby’s skin, too.

They come packaged in a natural brown cardboard box, below.

Some bunny likes merino.

This ivory baby shawl (NZ $230) has a beautiful patchwork-esque motif called box lace, and wide ribbing edges. The baby wrap is a decent enough size to comfortably swaddle a baby, be a blanket in the cot, or to lie upon on the floor.

Everyone who has touched it has commented on how incredible it feels. Everyone who can talk, that is.

This little guy? He just touches it and falls asleep.
