Mexico Dining Room launched with a Margarita Masterclass for VIP friends, and media, on Tuesday 2nd May to celebrate the upcoming Cinco de Maya festivities and give us a glimpse of the brand new upstairs space.

From the hilarious speaker and beverage expert Frankie, we learned about the history of tequila making from blue agave plants and tasted samples of aged and oak barrel tequilas. We had to put aside memories of ‘tequila past’ and any negative connotations it held (student drunken parties etc) and embrace ‘tequila of the future’ – quality, pure tequila as the Mexican locals enjoy.

Next, we had the opportunity to each design and make our very own custom made margaritas! They are 2 parts tequila, 1 part lime and 1 part orange sec. I made the ‘Passionfruity’ (bascially 8 parts passionfruit to 1 part tequila! It was VERY sweet.)

The historic downtown building with its arched windows and old brick walls lend a solid character feel to the space, in contrast to the heavily decorated Mexican iconography of the downstairs (also on the Strand, Takapuna and Victoria Street Hamilton) dining areas. A light feature zig zags up the Customs Street wall with toy donkeys climbing the hill.

Below: The Mexico Dining Room, located upstairs above the Mexico restaurant – which is startingly popular and recently won best value dining in Auckland so will probably be even harder to get a seat at now! Luckily the Dining Room is able to booked, so is perfect for large groups, corporate events, birthday parties and more.
