Mexico transformed the landscape of fast food dining out in Auckland. It rode in on a white horse holding aloft a cacti branch in one hand, and a tequila in the other, to a city scape filled with boring, often overpriced unInstagrammable Mexican food restaurants and gave us waitresses with roses on their heads, Frida and Day of the Dead graphics pasted all over the walls, and Mexican wrestler masks for children. First dates, shopping siestas, and nights out for Aucklanders have not been the same since.
Now, they have six restaurants, including one in Hamilton, and plans for even more.
We headed along to the winter menu launch in the upper room in the original Britomart location to taste small bites of the new menu. It was spicy and fresh – no food is cooked offsite – and ranged from spiced prawns to lamb quesadillas to lime curd cheesecake. Of course, we washed it down with a margarita.
