NZ Fashion Week 22 September 2010
Sustainable would be a word to aptly describe Gisborne-based label neverblack’s debut collection Queen of the Night at fashion week this year. Not in the sense of anything to do with the environment per se, but more because they haven’t set themselves up to fail.
Occasionally debut collections are sent down the runway all guns blazing, which are often incredible and creative and unique, but can make one think "how are they going to keep that up for next season?" There was none of that feeling at neverblack. The quality, classic styling and fabrics, and fresh but simple designs have been put together well, and there is no doubt they will be able to again and again pull off intelligent and saleable collections like this one in the future.
An entourage of models walked out together in an opening finale, giving an overall impression of what was to be expected for the rest of the show. It was fairly dark and slightly sinister, with the girls sporting black lipstick and over-the-knee boots. The garments were the same; a grungy feel with colours of black, charcoal, grey, white, nude and a splash of blue.
Sheer dresses were a strong look for the girls, with elegant criss-cross strap detailing on the first dress sent down the catwalk a favourite. The rest had innovative shapes but were not too out there for the often conservative New Zealand shopper.
The menswear was standout, with well-structured wide-lapelled jackets, heavy wool coats, fleece-lined jackets and vests, tailored trousers and cosy wrap-yourself-up-and-keep-warm scarves. Perfect for the chilly nights out when style is still important.
This label is what New Zealand needs at the moment. Classic lines, strong silhouettes and interesting details on garments that don’t break the bank. With people like All Black Ali Williams and girlfriend Casey Green in the front row, it shows this new label isn’t just for the fabulous fashionista, but will be a universal brand that all Kiwis will grow to love.
