I woke up early to refresh my emails about 10 times to see if we got backstage access to Alexander Wang. Nothing. Ate a pain au chocolat as consolation.
Truthfully, it would have been a logistical mess. The Alexander Wang show was out in Brooklyn (very hip) and Tibi was on the east side of Manhattan. I would have needed the Stig to been my cabbie.
Tibi wasn’t for awhile and as a photographer/videographer, I got excited by the sun. Natural sunlight = happy Iris. So I bundled up and off I went. “Bundled up?!? But it’s Fashion Week”, you exclaim with horror.
Here’s the thing about me, is I’m not one for liking my photo taken. Don’t get me wrong, I can be attention seeking (ahem, diary posts).
Having done this NYFW for a bit now, I’ve observed something, if you want your photo taken, it will get taken. Of course, if you’re trying too hard (think reality show Insert-A-Place Shore) then you’d probably get a pity picture. But how you’re dressed (whatever your style,) is only half the battle. The other part is attitude: seem like you don’t want your photo taken and you are a photographer’s prey.
And then there are the fashionistas that do not acquiesce. They will march straight to the doors at break neck speeds as photographers run (yes run) to snap their picture.
I don’t want to portray that these photographers as leeches; they have a real sense of fashion. They may not dress like it, but they know exactly what looks good and doesn’t. And let us pay homage the father of street style – Bill Cunningham. If you don’t know who he is, Google him. Now. I’ll wait.
But that’s enough sociology, really, we want to see some outrageous outfits.

When it was far too cold and the fashion was far too boring, I made my way to Chelsea Piers for backstage access to Tibi with Bobbi Brown. The space registered a warm milieu that I hadn’t experienced. Don’t’ get me wrong, the PR and artists are always lovely. It’s the entourages that can turn it into Mean-Girls-cum-Greek-Tragedy panto.
I was allowed happily to wander around. NO RESTRICTIONS. You could preview the clothes, look at the model boards and ask questions of anyone. I could not have more of a girl crush on Bobbi Brown’s Director of Global Artistry, Kim Soane. Her tip to survive fashion week: drink lots of water and be nice to everyone! More of her please. But for her humbleness, she’s an elite artist. Her look for Tibi was a perfect vision. [read our Bobbi Brown article at Tibi]

The jovial atmosphere was infectious. The models were so insanely beautiful. Of course, that meant a lot of male models just hanging around. Darnit, the light was wrong, but who doesn’t look French male models playing foosball?

I felt recharged and refreshed after being at Tibi. I probably could have stayed to the end, but sometimes you have to leave the party just to leave it in that perfect state.
I know many readers probably would like to hear about NYFW parties. But we all have vices and mine is live theatre and music. So later that night, had dinner with friends, listened to live jazz and talked into the early morning hours. I wouldn’t have had the day end any other way.
