A gown called Alice

It’s not every weeknight Grey Lynn sees an edgy, young and well-dressed crowd spilling out of a store and onto the street.

Young designer Georgia Currie launched her first Georgia Alice collection, ‘Imperial’, at Black Box Boutique in Grey Lynn, Auckland last night on Wednesday 13 February, to a more-than-full house.

With four solid stockists – in Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown as well as here at Black Box – already to her name, and nestled in the elite PR stable of Showroom 22, charming Georgia looks set to make a worthy contribution to the New Zealand fashion scene.

‘Imperial’ is entirely white, ecru and black, a collection of luxe basics. Georgia explained that she wanted to start her label with foundation pieces on which to build in future collections, and which women can use as essential basics in their own wardrobes.

She’s big on natural fibres and this first collection is primarily silk, cotton, wool and leather. A standout is the cotton/polyester jacquard which comes in a blazer, pant, sweat and mini- the latter with an interesting side tuck into the waist so that the skirt sits flat across the body, creating a strong geometric shape. Beautiful finishing and attention to detail are already hallmarks of the Georgia Alice brand.

Georgia has also produced her first accessory, a calf-hide bag priced at a very affordable $149 – at least one Fashion Editor was seen getting her wallet out to snap one up. (Is this you Anya Brighouse? – Ed.)

900 Grapes wines saw the crowd well-watered, and special mention must go to the beautiful ecru and black themed canapes by Kate Underwood.
