WORLD announced opening its 10th store – and 5th in Australia – as well as achieving a milestone 21st birthday next month, with a celebratory VIP party at the Langham Hotel’s Great Room on Tuesday 20th April.

The installation in the centre of the aptly ornate and chandalier-festooned room showcased their Winter 2010 range wittily entitled "I need someone really bad, are you really bad?"

It’s a more subdued collection; some guests commented a more saleable and wearable one, with some commenting the clothes were so androgynous they had difficulty identifying at first which was a men’s mannequin and which was a women’s! Men’s pants were cropped and cuffed, or high-waisted with belts and women’s had masculine features teamed with feminine white sheer blouses and velvet jackets. Perhaps it doesn’t matter; pick n’ mix what you love best, that’s the WORLD way.

Upon entry, guests were asked to pose with two models in front of gigantic WORLD shopping bags and told it was for a lookbook. Below: Really bad… Helene and Megan with the speech bubble-bearing models.

Denise and Francis took to the podium to welcome guests and Francis commented how they’ve seen it grow over the 21 years from a "small label into an irreverant company!" Denise announced next month it will be 21, to loud and appreciative "ooohs" from the crowd. "A lot of you have been with us the whole time; we’ve met you and your families. In the last five years we’ve opened the WORLD beauty stores, and in the midst of a recession, opened our tenth store in Osborne Street Newmarket and our fifth Australian store in Paddington, Sydney."

"Bennie Castles, our men’s wear designer has been here ten years. He stands in for me a lot, and if there’s any problem, just call Benny!"

Benny Castles is currently working on publishing a free printed magazine, Master Mouse Patrol, to be available at WORLD stores and around town. "It’s a bit like VICE" he says, "a culture magazine, essentially ideas of lots of people. It’s not specifically fashion, or art or design or humour, but more of a community." We look forward to reading Master Mouse Patrol and checking out its beauty column by Helene.

Tina Plunkett loves WORLD and said it was even fantastic to wear throughout pregnancy due to its great cut and design, with baby Jasmine who is sure to become an avid WORLD customer soon!

Also starting fashionably young, are sisters Imogen (2 3/4) and Ella (5 1/2) Maskell, both wearing Trelise Cooper. The gorgeous girls are no strangers to the camera after having modelled in the Trelise Kids fashion week show.

Christine Young (Editor of mixitup.co.nz) and Penny Black, DJ on BFM.

Katia Holland (WORLD retail assistant), Christie Lekner (Deluxe Beauty Manager), and VIP customer Heather Robinson. "I have so much fun with WORLD clothes!" Heather said, "I love their stuff!" Heather wears Gaspar shoes, WORLD black dress she customised shorter tucking the hemline up, WORLD crystal vest from last winter and a fabulous WORLD hat we spied from across the room.

The WORLD team photo almost emptied the room and had enough members for a couple of incredibly stylishly-dressed netball teams.
